Lumineers

Lumineers Before & After Photos

How do Lumineers differ from porcelain veneers?

Lumineers are veneers. But compared with traditional porcelain veneers, Lumineers are thinner (approximately 0.2 mm) and highly translucent. Because they are thinner, applying Lumineers doesn’t require removal of the existing tooth enamel. However, to some patients, Lumineers can feel bulky on the fronts of their teeth. That’s because Lumineers sit atop the full thickness of enamel on the teeth. Porcelain veneers are slightly thicker than Lumineers, but they are still usually less than 0.5 mm. Because they are thicker, porcelain veneers are stronger and more durable than Lumineers. To make room for the veneer on the tooth surface, Dr. Garcia removes the width of the veneer from the tooth enamel, usually from 0.4 to 0.5 mm. Once the veneer is then placed, the tooth feels and looks the same size as it was prior to placing the veneer on it.

What Is A Porcelain Veneer?

A Porcelain Veneer is a custom made, porcelain tooth covering that is as thin as a fingernail. This thin, super strong shell is placed over a dark, damaged, crooked, small or stained tooth to create a healthy, beautiful smile. Dr. Garcia uses the best materials available and a world-class dental laboratory to create custom, porcelain veneers for your healthy, beautiful Smile Makeover. This thin, porcelain shell is permanently bonded to each tooth or in the smile line (usually front top ten teeth and bottom front 10 teeth) as part of a Smiles By Garcia Smile Makeover. The bonded Porcelain Veneer is incredibly strong and long lasting, will not stain or change color, and can help strengthen and protect the supporting tooth.

What problems can be addressed with porcelain veneers?

When considering veneers, a distinction needs to be made between a cosmetic issue and a more serious problem. Porcelain veneers are only a cosmetic solution, merely covering underlying aesthetic flaws with your teeth. Veneers don’t correct those problems; they simply cover them. But before Dr. Garcia can place veneers onto the front surfaces of your teeth, any underlying serious problems, such as decay, deep cracks, and the like, need to be rectified. Also, if a patient has gum disease, this needs to be reversed prior to placing veneers. Otherwise, veneers are the ultimate cover-up for these problems:
  • Revitalizing the surface of a tooth
  • Concealing chips
  • Covering badly stained, discolored teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Masking alignment problems
  • Covering cracks or wear
  • Providing an alternative to orthodontic work

What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?

What’s the benefit of having a perfect, bright white smile? That’s what porcelain veneers placed by Dr. Garcia give you. Porcelain veneers cover imperfections with your teeth — things like deep stains, chips, misshapen teeth, and the like — and make your smile perfect. People draw confidence from having a great smile. It makes them more at ease when talking and when in close proximity to others. Porcelain veneers give you that perfect smile. Plus, porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining, and they don’t require any special treatment.

Who is a good candidate for porcelain veneers?

If you have cosmetic issues with your teeth, porcelain veneers are a great solution to completely remake the appearance of your smile. But, as mentioned above, they are only cosmetic fixes. For a patient to be a good candidate to have porcelain veneers placed, their teeth need to be in good overall health. Also, candidates need to be aware that this is a lifetime commitment. To make room to apply veneers onto the front surfaces of the teeth, a small amount of the tooth enamel needs to be shaved down. This enamel is gone for good, so those teeth will need to be covered with veneers for the rest of your life. Once the set of veneers we place reaches its lifespan, you’ll need to have another set placed.

Are porcelain veneers safe? Can they harm my teeth?

The eMax dental porcelain we use for all of our porcelain veneers at Smiles by Garcia is the finest quality available. Dental porcelain is used for most crowns, veneers, bridges, and for the artificial teeth used in dental implants. It is safe, and it doesn’t have any side effects or issues with the human body. To make room for the veneers on your teeth, Dr. Garcia removes about 0.5 mm of your tooth enamel. While not “harming” the teeth, per se, it does make it necessary for those teeth to always have veneers covering them.

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

A set of the porcelain veneers made with eMax porcelain can last anywhere from 7 to 20 years. This sounds like a wide range, but it is due to the health of the underlying teeth and gums. If a veneer does come off for some reason, in most cases it can be reattached. As mentioned above, when your veneers are ready to be replaced, you will need to have a new set made. Because Dr. Garcia removed enamel from the front surfaces of your teeth, those teeth will always need to be covered with veneers. In that way, the treatment is permanent, but you will need probably at least two sets of veneers over your lifetime.

How should I care for porcelain veneers?

Teeth with veneers don’t require any special care. Normal brushing and flossing are all that’s required. You shouldn’t use toothpaste that is overly abrasive, as it can scratch the veneers. Beyond care, it’s wise to use some common sense with what you eat. Chewing bones or biting into candy apples can cause a veneer to dislodge. Dr. Garcia can place the veneer back on your tooth, but a little caution with food choices is wise.
