What is Sedation Dentistry?
Due to their anxiety about visiting the dentist, many patients don’t receive the preventive care they need to keep their oral health in good shape. That’s because their anxiety keeps the patient from making and keeping appointments with the dentist. Sedation dentistry allows patients to overcome their anxiety and fear about going to the dentist. By enabling the patient to relax and feel at ease, this helps to eliminate the barriers he or she has erected to keep them from having necessary regular dental care. This preventive care is critical to long-term oral health, but patients who have extreme anxiety about visiting the dentist often don’t come in for these twice-yearly cleanings and exams.
At Smiles by Garcia, sedation allows our patients to overcome various levels of anxiety, all the way up to phobia about even visiting the dentist. Plus, when a patient is sedated, he or she can group various procedures into a single office visit, making better use of their time. And in the end, you have little or no recollection about your visit.
Types Of Sedation DentistrySmiles By Garcia offers a range of Sedation Dentistry options that will allow you to feel completely relaxed and comfortable throughout your dental visit. Smiles By Garcia offers the latest, most effective sedation techniques available, including:
- Nitrous Oxide Gas (Feel very relaxed, but completely conscious)
- Oral Sedation Prescription pills that will help you feel completely comfortable and relaxed. You may not even remember being in the dentist’s chair. This is our most popular Sedation Dentistry option.
- General Anesthesia This Sedation Dentistry option is the ultimate in comfort and relaxation. General Anesthesia is administered in our office by a Medical Anesthesiologist who monitors your comfort throughout the procedure.
What dental procedures require sedation? The beauty of sedation at Smile by Garcia is that it’s all up to the patient. If you get anxious before a routine exam and cleaning, there’s no reason not to use sedation to take off the edge. Sedation isn’t meant to remove pain — that’s the job of local anesthesia — it’s simply there to help you relax and deal with any anxiety or nerves you have. In other words, we can provide sedation with any procedure you come in for. What’s important is that you come in for the treatment you need to keep your smile healthy and bright.
What Are the Advantages of Sedation Dentistry? One of the biggest advantages of using a sedation dentist is that it allows people who would otherwise avoid much needed dental treatment to overcome their anxiety and get the healthy, beautiful smile they need and want. An added benefit is that people often feel like their dental treatment took only a few minutes. Therefore, Smile Makeovers and other complicated dental treatments can be done in just a couple of comfortable, efficient visits saving you time and stress.
Can Anybody Be Treated With Sedation Dentistry?Dr. Garcia has helped many people overcome their fear of the dentist who thought they would never be able to be helped. No matter how bad you think your teeth look or how afraid you are of the dentist…Smiles By Garcia and Dr. Garcia have the right solution for you! You can have a straight, white, healthy and beautiful smile in just 2 visits while relaxing with safe, gentle Sedation Dentistry.
Is Sedation Safer Than General Anesthesia? While we do offer general anesthesia delivered by a medical anesthesiologist, it generally only is used for more involved oral surgeries or very lengthy procedures. General anesthesia is safe, but it can have risks on rare occasions. Sedation with oral sedatives or nitrous oxide is safer. We closely monitor the dosages for every patient, ensuring you’ll be comfortable, yet completely safe.
What Can I Expect with Sedation Dentistry?
This depends on the type of sedation you’ve chosen. If you’ve opted for oral sedation, you receive the pill from 30 to 60 minutes before your procedure begins. The pill will make you drowsy, but you’re still awake.
Nitrous oxide delivers virtually instantaneous results. It is given through a mask that’s placed over your nose. The delivery and its effects are immediate, and so is the reverse. As soon as the mask is removed the effects wear off in just a few seconds.
How Long Do the Effects of Dental Sedation Last?
The effects of oral sedation last from two to four hours after your appointment. The effects of nitrous oxide stop as soon as the mask is removed from your nose.
Is Oral Sedation Painful?
Again, there is a little misconception here. Sedation is not anesthesia. Sedation has the goal of helping the patient overcome his or her anxiety or fear that they associate with the dentist. Anesthesia is what keeps you comfortable and pain-free. Modern dental anesthesia ensures Dr. Garcia’s patients don’t feel anything during any of our treatments.
What Can I Expect After Sedation Dentistry?
If you’ve had oral sedation, the effects can linger for a few hours, so you’ll need to have someone drive you home. With nitrous oxide, as soon as the mask is removed the effects basically end, so you can drive yourself home.
Sedation has the pleasant side benefit of also creating an amnesia-like effect, so you have little or no recollection of your appointment.
